Mass for the Feast of St Benedict
Mass will be celebrated at Fountains Abbey on 11th July between 12pm and 12.45pm to mark St Benedict’s life and legacy. There will be a retiring collection which is split between Fountains Abbey and the Fountains Abbey Chaplaincy: this year, the Chaplaincy are raising money to help homeless people in Harrogate. 11th July is the feast day for St Benedict. The Cistercian monks who used to worship and work at Fountains Abbey lived according to St Benedict’s rule, which he devised in 516 AD. He is therefore of particular importance to the specific history of Fountains Abbey as well as being a crucial figure in Christian monasticism more generally. Many monks today still live by his rule.
